SERVICE PUPIL PREMIUM 2018 This message is for the attention of Regular Forces Service parents based in England.

If your child attends a state school, Academy or Free school in England and has been registered with the school as a Service pupil, the school will be granted a Service Pupil Premium of £300.

The Service Pupil Premium (SPP) is provided by the Department for Education (DfE) to enable schools to offer additional, mainly pastoral support during challenging times; this could include anything from a Service parent being away, being injured on active service, to bereavement.  Funds are paid directly to schools with Head Teachers and school Governors deciding how the funds are used.

Schools with Service children in Reception to Year 11 classes are eligible to receive SPP, but only if your child’s name appears on the school roll as being a Service child.  The annual census takes place on 18 January 2018 and children must be registered with the school before this date.

You are encouraged to contact the school and make them aware your child is from a Service family.  (Pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the full time Reserve Service should be classed as Service children) This information is not shared with other organisations and is protected on the National Pupil database. For more information on eligibility, please see the links below:

For any other queries regarding Service children contact the Directorate Children and Young People’s educational advisory arm, Children's Education Advisory Service (CEAS) via email: or telephone: 01980 618244.

Little Troopers Treasures

Little Troopers Treasures is a project LTT partnered with Harper Collins, to bring children's books to forces families, currently there are nine books available to record.

> The service family downloads the app then creates a family login, the service person then logs in wherever they may be (WIFI needed) or before they go away and records some stories, the app captures their face, voice and the book pages.

> Once done the app zips up the story with lots of love and immediately the service child can go to the Little Trooper mode of the family login and there will be a surprise story waiting! They can watch the stories, or listen, over and over again.

> There are also some free supporting resources for families to accompany this app, a weekly planner sheet to print off and use plus separation diaries for both parent and child to complete while separated and then share once reunited.

All the information and download links plus the resources files to print off can be found HERE

Royal British Legion - Best Practice Guide - Support Service Children in School in England

Click HERE
to view and/or download the Guide
The Royal British Legion has produced a new best practice guide focusing on Service children in school.
The guide looks at some of the big challenges facing Service children today and by sharing examples of good practice from across England (a separate Wales version will shortly be ready), recommends ways in which local authorities, schools and families themselves can improve the experience of Service children in education. Problems associated with admissions into schools and the adverse effects on a Service pupil’s wellbeing are explored, alongside information on the extra funding available to Service children through the Service Pupil Premium, Education Support Fund and more. Key recommendations include:
  • Encouraging schools to be creative with the use of funding available for Service pupils and share ideas and practice through networks of schools with Service children on the roll.
  • Suggesting that local authorities facilitate collaboration between schools, local military units, and local authority staff to ensure that everyone is aware of the challenges faced by Service children and what can be done to address them.
  • Encouraging Service families to make use of help available from the Ministry of Defence, Department of Education and charities and other organisations such as The Royal British Legion and the three families federations.

Army Families Federation (AFF). DIO to review CAAS location data

We’re delighted to be able to report that DIO will now be reviewing some of the factors affecting proposed changes to Army families’ final CAAS band, specifically relating to location.
These changes were first reported a few months ago, and the original timeline for implementation of these largely increased charges, based on CAAS location factors, was to be from September 2017, giving families at least 93 days’ notice.
It’s become apparent that in order to ensure that the data is accessible to families, some of the factors, including the broadband baseline, required further investigation.
As a result, no changes to final CAAS bands due to location will now be made until 1 April 2018, once the review has been completed, families will be notified, still giving the original amount of 93 days’ notice of any changes to the final CAAS band. The charges will not be backdated.
For those families already at the final CAAS band, an adjustment will be made to that banding, and for those still transitioning SFA, the location factors will be taken into account and the final band for charge will be amended.
No letters will be sent to SFA regarding the location review and any associated CAAS band changes until the review is finished.
AFF’s been working hard to help bring about this development and we’re pleased that DIO has taken our concerns on board and is working to try to make the process simpler.
