Chartered Management Institute signs the Armed Forces Covenant

Service Families Benefit from CMI Membership

The Chartered Management Institute has pledged to support Service spouses and partners in gaining the leadership qualifications to help them further their career.

Ensuring that Service spouses and partners are not disadvantaged in finding and staying in employment due to service life is a key part of the Armed Force Covenant, which states that: The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has sought to uphold this promise by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. In their pledges, the CMI support Service spouses and civil partners through their MOD Family Membership Scheme, which provides access to Leadership, Mentoring and Coaching qualifications, helping Service spouses to gain the key skills and professional recognition which can help Service family members to find employment. The Scheme is also available free to children of Service personnel (aged 16-18) and allows them to become a Campus CMI Affiliate with access to all the benefits of online resources, including study support.

CMI’s pledge offers a discount on their qualifications and membership for family members of Service personnel who are CMI members, and a commitment to support Service spouses or Reservists who they employ with flexible working arrangements, where possible. Chief of Defence People, Lieutenant General Richard Nugee is a CMI companion and participated in the signing of the Covenant at an event on 14 November.
He said:
“The families of our Service personnel are an important part of the Covenant. We value and are grateful to them – the unsung heroes who support our Armed Forces. Knowing that the nation, and organisations like the Chartered Management Institute recognises this is extremely important and fundamental in making the Armed Forces Covenant work.”

Ann Francke, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute said:
“We’re proud to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, and helping families of the heroic men and women who serve our country get the support they need to develop their careers. Thousands of members of the Armed Forces who’ve gained CMI-accredited qualifications have benefited from improved performance in their roles, as well as from building confidence and gaining qualifications to help them resettle into civilian life at the end of their military career. Now, their families also have the chance to develop their own skills and qualifications.”

Full details on what membership can offer military families can be found on the CMI website at
http://www.managers.org.uk/mod-membership.

Armed Forces TV Licensing

In Ministry of Defence (MOD) accommodation, on or off base, anyone who watches or records television programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any device, must be covered by a TV Licence. This includes computers, laptops, TVs, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
Armed forces personnel are not usually covered by their home TV Licence while living on base. In service accommodation, they’re only covered by their home licence if they watch TV using a device that’s powered solely by its own internal batteries, and it is not plugged into the mains or an aerial.

The MOD fully supports us in administering TV Licensing legislation.
It costs £145.50 for colour & £49.00 for a black and white TV Licence.

As you will be aware, the scheme which was launched in 2014, allows serving military personnel to borrow up to half their salary up to a cap of £25,000, interest free over ten years so they can buy their first home, extend a current one or move up the property ladder.

The news is featured on the Armed Forces Covenant website https://www.armedforcescovenant.gov.uk/housing-development/ and includes comments from L/Cpl Baffour Asante whose family has benefitted from the scheme.

Armed Forces Covenant – Book Initiative!

Making a difference - working together with our colleagues from the library service across Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire, following our recommendations, they have been able to provide additional support for Service Children, their families and those families with a close service connection, by introducing a selection of relevant books into our local libraries –including specific publications which look at the issues facing children/families from a serving background.  These books are also appropriate for children from non-serving/ex-serving families, to help foster a greater understanding of the issues faced by their peers.
In Warwickshire the school’s library service and the mobile library service have also taken up this initiative.   Our colleagues working with the mobile service have reported that this has been a great success with the books being very popular particularly at Bramcote barracks.   For more information regarding the titles of books now in stock visit our website

Forces Enterprise Network Hub

Forces Enterprise Network Hub
Thursday 23rd August 2016
New Careers and Enterprise company for Armed Forces Community

The Forces Enterprise Network, Recruit for Spouses and Evolution Forces Families have announced the creation of a new careers and enterprise company ‘Forces Enterprise Network Hub’ a fully integrated organisation which aims to transform the provision of careers and business support for the ‘whole’ Armed Forces Community.

FEN Hub exists to provide members of our Armed Forces community with the skills, resources and practical tools needed to be successful in whatever route to employment they choose, either by starting and maintaining a business or securing employment.

We bring our passion for business, experience in recruitment, knowledge of financial services and expertise in delivering training programmes and business networking to our defence community, and together we are making a difference in the lives of tri-service members, veterans, reservists, spouses and their families.

Christine Dedman, Director at Forces Enterprise Network says: “Our newly established organisation is a natural fit, together we can provide extended services to the whole Armed Forces community drawing on our individual strengths and in-depth understanding of the defence community in which we operate.

Through our combined experience we have created a social enterprise designed specifically to meet the needs of our Armed Forces personnel, their spouses, veterans and reservists. We aim to offer a comprehensive support utilising our combined connections. Our partnership unites our individual members and works in response to the changing shift in employment options, MoD and government policy to support further the choices and support available in employment and self-employment to the Armed Forces community.

Heledd Kendrick, CEO at Recruit for Spouses says: “Recruit for Spouses believes that no military spouse should have their career subjugated because of their attachment to the Armed Forces.

FEN Hub offers extended member services via online business support, downloadable guides on a range of employment and self-employment topics, mentoring, seminars and representation. A network of business support hubs across the UK’s MoD bases, British Forces Germany, Belgium and Cyprus has strengthened the outreach FEN Hub can provide to our members in their local communities and encourages peer supervision, creating a unique business network of entrepreneurs from a previously undervalued, high-quality resource of professionals from our Armed Forces Community.

Nadine Monks, Director at Evolution Forces Families says: “EFF’s mission statement is to improve the financial outcomes and futures of the military community through the services we offer. As part of this we recognise that a second income or aspirations beyond a service career can be integral to the planning of this. We are delighted to be part of this uniquely holistic approach to addressing these needs.

Planesaver Credit Union

How we helped a fellow serviceman save £254 on monthly loan repayments.

Military personnel sometimes have limited access to financial services and particularly affordable credit, leaving them a potential target for high cost credit providers such as payday lenders and loan sharks.

We were recently approached by a serviceman who found himself in a spiral of debt, with a series of high interest Credit Card and Payday loans, with monthly repayments over £555 at an average interest rate of 244% APR.

We were able to lend to the individual responsibly, consolidating his existing debt into one manageable repayment straight from his pay.

We paid off all his existing borrowing, leaving the member with a new monthly repayment of £301 at a more favourable interest rate, meaning he could get back on track with his finances.

The serviceman said "Plane Saver guided me into making better financial decisions, this has made me more aware of how expensive some loans can be. Seeking help from the credit union helped me nearly halve my outgoings on debt. Thank you Plane Saver".
